Low Calorie Diets: Pros and Cons

Low Calorie Diets seem to be all the rage at the moment for those that are looking for a quick solution to weight reduction. Perhaps the main reason for this is due to the amount of celebs touting this as a decent method. Before you embark on this though, let me run you through a couple of things.

So what is a very low calorie diet?

Well, as the name suggests, you consume very few calories over a period of time. As you may know, it is the calories that we consume which lead to us putting on weight. Every person out there has a set amount of calories that they need to consume per day in order for their body to ‘function’. With a very low calorie diet you will be consuming food way below this minimum. This means that your body needs to dip into your fat reserves and thus you lose weight. On a very low calorie diet you will be eating less than 1,000 calories a day. This is a huge decrease compared to what you normally would be consuming. You can either carry out this diet for a continuous period of twelve weeks or intermittent periods.

So who should use a very-low calorie diet?

Well, this isn’t a method for everybody. I suggest that you only use it if you are struggling to lose weight using more conventional methods. You should of course never embark upon a diet of this nature if you are pregnant (your baby needs food after all!) and you should never embark if you have health issues which may cause it to be a problem. For example, if you have diabetes. I never suggest that you go on a very low calorie diet without speaking to your doctor first.

The major health benefit of following this particular type of diet is the fact that you will be able to shed your weight quickly. This means that you will be able to get down to a weight that is healthy for you, and hopefully put aside some of your health problems.

Adverse effects of a very-low-calorie diet

The problem is, there are also a few adverse effects of a low-calorie diet. Perhaps the main one being that you do not always get the nutrients that you require. For this reason I suggest you look up some low calorie diet recipes to ensure you get most of what you need. You may need to take supplements to top this off. In addition to this, those that are on very low calorie diets can suffer from tiredness or anaemia. You may also suffer from heart palpitations. If this occurs then you should look to stop the diet as soon as you can.

Maintaining Weight Loss

When you are coming out of a very low calorie diet it is important that you do not consume normal amounts of food quickly. This is because your body will store the fat from these foods undoing all of your hard work. You will want to ease your way back into a normal eating pattern slowly. There is plenty of information out there online
